WATCH DOCUMENTARY TRAILER
Embark on a riveting journey through the pages of history with General Kingsley Chinkuli—a visionary leader, a strategic genius, and a key architect of Zambia's military legacy.
"Reigning in Chaos: Chinkuli and the Genius of Command" chronicles the remarkable life and achievements of General Kingsley Chinkuli, Zambia's first indigenous Army Commander. Appointed at the age of 27 in 1970 by President Kenneth Kaunda, Chinkuli shattered the prevailing norm where most officers were seconded from the British Army and commanded the Defence Force during the challenging period of the liberation struggle.
Born in Liteta Village, Central Province, Chinkuli emerged from the royal family of the Liteta Chieftainship. Despite his regal lineage, his childhood unfolded as a herds' boy, steeped in rural traditions. Cattle herding, hunting, and farming dominated his early years, punctuated by traditional training that instilled leadership traits and a deep sense of community responsibility.
The Book further captures Chinkuli's formative years, including his education at the prestigious British Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. Returning to Zambia, he rapidly ascended through the military ranks, culminating in his appointment as the Commander of the Zambia National Defense Force (ZNDF) in 1976.
Central to the narrative is Chinkuli's groundbreaking concept of a National Wide Defence System (NWDS). The book intricately explores the genesis of this visionary defense strategy, detailing its implementation and the profound impact it had on Zambia's security landscape. Chinkuli's genius of command is revealed as the narrative weaves through his strategic thinking, emphasising decentralisation, coordination, and capacity building as pillars of the NWDS.
After my appointment as Army Commander, I soon came to the realisation that merely training more officers and soldiers wouldn't be a viable solution for Zambia's security concerns. The numerical inadequacy of our regular force compare to the sheer size of Zambia presented a formidable challenge, and it became evident that an alternative approach was necessary.
